2nd International Conference on the Future, under the auspices of the ECI
The initiative “Athens calls Athens” (ACA) organizes the 2nd International Inter-Athenian Conference, entitled: “Man and his creations, anticipating the future”, from 21 to 23 November 2022, under the auspices of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athensand European Communication Institute and with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, the Region of Attica, the City of Athens and other important bodies.
Two years after the successful 1st International Inter-Athenian Conference, the 2nd will harness the power of the Internet to unite the global Athens, with the aim of exploring the impact of all modern creations and discoveries on the future development of humanity.
At this year’s conference, the ECI will be represented by Father – Prof. Dr. Aristarchos Grekas which will suggest the importance of the Humanitarian Dimension of Artificial Intelligence. F. Aristarchos curates the relevant postgraduate course at the Institute, as part of the Postgraduate Program “Humanistic Communication and New Technologies”, which ECI offers as part of the bilingual Master of Arts implemented, with courses in Athens and Vienna.
It will be prefaced – greeted by the Head of ECI Marios Nottas.
“Athens invites Athens” is a network for the development of synergies at a social, cultural, developmental and research level and the creation of links between cities bearing the name “Athens” on a global scale. The network can establish branches in Greece and abroad, for cooperation with companies, universities and institutions around the world that have the same or similar purpose.
All ACA activities focus on the culture and promotion of the city of Athens as cultural capital around the world, through the creation of an international network, which promotes, develops and optimizes the quality characteristics of institutions and people.
The societies between the cities that bear the name “Athens”, as well as the nickname “Athens” are the nucleus of formation, promotion and dissemination of the values of the ACA.
The Conference –which aims to create a Human Observatory, which will function as a global meeting place where collectives and individuals will circulate both their research work and their professional experiences– includes three thematic sessions:
- Sustainable development
Sustainable development is the search for new resources to replace those that have been overexploited, endangering our natural living systems. To what extent is the ability of future generations to meet their own needs at stake? Are the new resources of equal or even greater capacity for social, political and economic development? Is sustainable development tangible, measurable and equitable, without geographical or cultural boundaries? Are today’s generations able to regenerate, preserve and improve planetary resources for future generations? Should humanity develop innovation or return to traditional approaches when there was a balance of economic, social and environmental resources? What is the roadmap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, is there a consolidated chart?
- Cultural Internationalization
The importance of Cultural Heritage lies in the symbolic and economic preservation, essence and dignity of human life. It is also intertwined with identity and territory, where individuals and communities are often in competition or outright conflict. Conflicts may arise over issues of indigenous land rights and cultural property, or between ethnic minorities and sovereign majorities challenging the right to define and manage the cultural heritage of the minority. We observe the suppression of intangible manifestations of culture, such as language, clothing and ritual, or the complete physical destruction of material objects and buildings. A phenomenon of globalization? Also, in our turbulent times, we are witnessing the movement of large numbers of people to vast areas, migrations due to hostilities. Are diaspora participants involved in homeland heritage issues, and if so, should such thoughts be extended to their descendants?
- Climate crisis and natural disasters
The increase in global warming is a fact that leads to a climate crisis. Could this global crisis be, historically, the biggest challenge to internationalising government cooperation before climate chaos becomes the new reality? Right now, is the planet going through a climate crisis or is it in the process of permanent climate change? Natural disasters disrupt national economies with a significant impact on the people and communities of today and tomorrow. Can the drawing up and implementation of contingency plans improve the effectiveness of prevention, preparedness and response systems? Could the rational use of energy using new materials and instruments for the gradual decarbonisation process, the linking of sustainable and multimodal urban mobility with wider urban regeneration interventions, waste management, water management, lead us to a climate-neutral balance?
In addition, the conference aims to establish a permanent scientific working group, which will study on an ongoing basis the cultural and social evolution of Man. Thus, it is addressed to professors, researchers and students of cities bearing the name or name “Athens” around the world, but also to the entire Greek and international academic community, as well as to executives of private sector companies.
